Stephen Spender journal, 1937-[ca. 1940].

Unpublished manuscript journal kept by Spender in part during two trips to Spain in early 1937, then continued in the early 1940s in London. Includes 32 pages on Spain, 10 pages of original drawings by Spender, 4 pages of working drafts of a poem on Faust (1 pasted-in typescript), and 79 undated pages on life in London during the Blitz.

Sir Stephen Harold Spender (February 28, 1909 - July 16, 1995) was an English poet and novelist who worked with the themes of social injustice and class struggle. Spender was born in London and educated at University College, Oxford. He was mentored by W. H. Auden with whom he maintained a life-long friendship.
